The afternoon dip isn’t random fatigue — it recurs at roughly the same time because it’s tied to your internal clock. Alertness and performance follow a daily rhythm with a well-documented post-lunch trough that occurs even when no lunch is eaten, which is why it’s sometimes called the post-lunch dip despite not being caused by lunch.1

A Heavy Lunch
Lunch doesn’t cause the dip, but a large, high-glycemic meal can deepen it. Larger meals are associated with greater post-meal sleepiness, compounding the circadian trough already underway.3

The dip is shallower when you’re well-rested and steeper when you’re not. Insufficient prior sleep raises baseline sleep pressure, so the afternoon trough starts from a higher level and feels more like a wall.2
